![]() ![]() It goes on for some 15 minutes before the band enters with some ensemble playing which could have been beautiful if not Sun Ra had continued to play so strange sounding chords. Again, it has Sun Ra playing his electric keyboards, but now in a free style where he produces chaotic clusters which can remind of pianist Cecil Taylor´s intense improvisations. ![]() The title track is 20 minutes long and takes up the rest of the album. ![]() Making them more easily availible to a larger audience. Atlantis was one of the Sun Ra albums which was reissued by Impulse in the mid 1970s. These studio recordings are believed to be recorded somewhere between 1967 and 69. The only featured member from his big horn section is tenor saxophonist John Gilmore. The first half of the album has Sun Ra playing some shorter songs on the clavinet with accompaniment by drummers. ![]() These sounds which probably was meant to sound futuristic has aged less well and today they sound like a soundtrack to an old science fiction or horror movie. He had used the electric piano allready some ten years ago and was clearly out after the strange sound effects electronic instruments could produce. Sun Ra plays what he calls the solar sound organ and the solar sound instrument, which are really a clavinet. On Atlantis he explores a fully psychedelic soundscape. Despite all his strangeness his music of the 1950s had been in the tradition of Duke Ellington and bebop. Atlantis is one of his most weird sounding albums. He was an underground artist long before the term was coined, and he had his own record label on which he released his own music. The composer, band leader and pianist who stated he was a visitor from outer space and had his band dressed up in space suites must at least have been more in tune with his times than in the more conservative 1950s.
